Website Analysis, 5th Ave

December 8th, 2009 by northernmonkey85

5th Avenue, Manchesters biggest and most succesful, long running indie nightclub. The club itself has a capacity of 1200 which it fills week on week, and is a Manchester hotspot for students who travel from afar to enjoy the cheap drinks and indie anthems until the early hours of the morning. All this in mind, you would presume that the club would utilise all forms of media and promotion at its disposal to a maximum, especially the internet. A number one essential for any business looking to promote itself to the masses, and this is a very important thing to get right, bearing in mind you cant please everyone. The purpose of the 5th Avenue website, along with any other business website is to advertise the product and services available. The website lets not only clubgoers, but sponsors and outsiders be made aware of the events hosted by the venue, and to portray an image of experiances avaialable. It should be utilised to convey and communicate information to a wide variety of people and on mass, making it an ideal tool to advertise and promote offers and promotions on a global scale.

The intended userbase is mainly students, regular attendees, fans, sponsors and company affiliates. Also people who have never visited the club before, may look at the site before going to the club.

The site itself is very basic, the structure is all based on one single landing page with information tabs/navigation bar at the top. The page does not allow for any site search enabling users to find specific things of interest. The homepage doesnt clearly state what it is that the company are offering and what is available on the site. All the information is condensed on the one page and many images are hidden and overlapped by one another.

The site itself is built with Adobe Flash Player making it extremely slow and difficult to use. Due to this the links on the page are not accessible. The homepage takes time to load and is not available to view on mobile technology or other applications without the proper software installed. And with many users of the internet now viewing while on the go this is a major disadvantage.  When at the landing page, there is no direct information telling you about what the club is or the services that they provide. There is to much information to take in and your eyes are constantly being averted to other images on the page which seems very confusing to a first time user. An advantage of the site is that all the information is on the one page and no scrolling is needed and all the information is right there in one space. However on a whole, there seems to be no ergonomic consideration for the user, the site is very difficult and confusing to work and does not portray the image of Manchesters No1 indie hotspot. The images on the site are fit for the purpose in the sense that they show the club in its true form. The site seems to have no identifying look which would seperate it from any other amateur attempt. In all i don’t regard the site as very user friendly nor do i want to spend the time trying to figure out how i get to what it is that i want to see.

Micro-Blogging, The New Word of Mouth

November 1st, 2009 by northernmonkey85

Micro-blogging (M-B) is a relatively new form of social media and is the new social networking phenomenon provided by services such as Twitter, Jaiku and Pownce to name a few. (M-B) is a primitive form of blogging allowing the user to write shorter brief text updates and enabling them to broadcast and share information while on the move between members of the blog post/social network. It’s an electronic word of mouth lowering the users requirement of time spent and thought writing the blog, as opposed to the time spent writing emails or on the phone, thus making it a very valued learning tool. Micro-blogging is being used in an educational framework daily by tutors and students, benefits include:

1.)Discussion continuing beyond the classroom, letting students ask questions, discuss topics and voice concerns.

2.)The tutor to forward important sources and useful information directly

An example of this is a site called Moodle, a virtual learning environment in which the teachers and students communicate via blogs/forums.
